Whether you’re loyal to your Dyson Airwrap, can’t live without your straighteners or rely on a quick blast of the hairdryer every morning, one thing is certain: heat styling takes its toll. Over time, repeated exposure to high temperatures can leave hair dry, brittle and prone to breakage, dulling both shine and colour. And who wants brittle, dull hair in the summer?

Fortunately, a good heat protectant works hard to shield hair from temperatures of up to 230°C while boosting hydration, smoothing frizz and even helping your style last longer. We tested and researched the standout products of 2026 to find the sprays that don’t just defend against heat damage – they leave your hair looking smoother, healthier and fresh from the salon, whatever your hair type or budget.

Why do you need heat protectant sprays, and when should you use them?

Heat styling might feel harmless in the moment – just a quick blow-dry, a few passes of the straighteners – but hair doesn’t forget or forgive. High temperatures quite literally push water out of the hair shaft and weaken the internal protein structure that keeps strands strong and flexible. Over time, that shows up as dryness, split ends, and that slightly frazzled look no conditioner quite fixes. A heat protectant doesn’t “repair” damage, but it does act like a buffer, helping reduce how much of that heat actually hits the hair itself, while smoothing the cuticle so it looks glossier and feels softer.

It’s needed any time heat enters the picture, which is more often than most people think. Blow-drying alone can expose hair to temperatures well above 100°C, and straighteners and curling irons can climb more than double that. In other words, it’s not just for big nights out or glossy blow-dries – it’s for the everyday routine most of us barely think about.

How we tested these heat protectant sprays

We reviewed every heat protectant featured in this guide for how well it performed in real-life styling. We considered how each formula felt on the hair, whether it left any residue, how easy it was to apply and whether it delivered on its claims to smooth frizz, boost shine and protect against heat damage.

Products were used following the brand’s instructions. We favoured lightweight formulas that left hair feeling soft and healthy without weighing it down or making it greasy, while also taking into account scent, value for money and suitability for different hair types. To support our testing, we also reviewed ingredient lists, giving preference to products with proven heat-protective ingredients and consistently positive performance.

1. Aveda Heat Relief Thermal Protector and Conditioning Mist 100ML

First things first, this spray’s scent isn’t shy, and that’s down to Aveda’s pure-fume™, the brand’s own blend of plant and flower essences. Once I’ve straightened my hair though, it turned into that “just left the salon” scent we all want from hair products. It protects against up to 232°C and uses jojoba and sunflower seed oils for conditioning.

It a doesn’t overspray or drip down and dries off quite quickly, so you don’t have to be stood around twiddling your thumbs before you can get on with straightening. Once styled, my hair felt instantly softer and glossier. I used it on dry hair only as per the brand’s directions.

Best for: that fresh-out-of-the-salon finish.

What’s not so good: the first blast of scent isn’t for everyone, but it does mellow down once you’ve styled.

2. Percy & Reed Heat Protect Spray 150ML

Percy & Reed was founded by hairdressers Paul Percival and Adam Reed (from Arkive), both of whom had years working with A-list clients and know a thing or two about hair. This heat protect spray is an ultra-fine mist, so it doesn’t come out wet and doesn’t dampen your hair. It goes on so light it barely feels like anything’s been applied – and the reach is impressive. One spray goes a long way – literally.

You can use it on damp hair before blow-drying or dry hair before hot tools. Pro-Vitamin B5 is doing the conditioning work here, penetrating into the cortex to strengthen and add shine. The scent is rather lovely, too – one of Percy & Reed’s signature blends – a distinctively fresh, herby mist that settles into a soft musk and wood base. Overall, a trusty one.

Best for: fine or easily weighed-down hair that needs protection without any added heaviness.

What’s not as good: the scent is rather strong, which is not ideal if you’re sensitive to fragrance.

3. Oribe Gold Lust Dry Heat Protection 250ML

Oribe, founded by celebrity hairstylist Oribe Canales, has walked many a red carpets before even hitting the shelves, and it sits comfortably in the “expensive but worth it” end of haircare.

Gold Lust is its repair-focused line. This specific spray is for dry hair only, and draws on a bio-restorative complex (plant collagen, caffeine, biotin, niacinamide) alongside coconut water and macadamia oil.

If you avoid dry-hair sprays fearing stickiness or residue, you’re in for a treat: this Gold Lust spray is surprisingly weightless. The scent is Oribe’s signature Côte d’Azur blend, with Calabrian bergamot, white jasmine, sandalwood – fresh and gorgeously luscious (albeit divisive as it depends on personal taste!). Because it’s a fine spray, you’ll need to be confidently heavy-handed with how much you spray. If the price tag doesn’t make you flinch, this is a throne contender.

Best for: a fresh-out-of-the-most-luxurious-salon-in-town finish.

What’s not as good: the hefty price tag.

4. Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer 250ml

Bumble and Bumble’s bestseller does the job of about three products at once – heat protectant, UV shield, and pre-styler in one milky spray. It blends six oils – coconut, argan, macadamia, sweet almond, safflower seed and grapeseed – but it doesn’t behave like one an oil-based product (it doesn’t make your hair look or feel greasy).

It protects up to 232°C and the UV filters mean it’s doing a critical job most heat protectants skip entirely – your scalp and your hair are part of your body too and need to be sun-protected. It also works on both damp and dry hair and a few spritzes go a long way. I’ve tried it on dry hair only, but it felt noticeably glossy and smooth. The size of the bottle makes it more worthwhile than other sprays. If you style your hair and use hot tools often, you’ll need as big a bottle as you can get so you’re not constantly adding to cart on the Look Fantastic website.

Best for: the much-needed UV protection, especially if hair is coloured, dry, or prone to frizz.

What’s not as good: it’s oil-based, so anyone with very fine or easily weighed-down hair may find it too rich.

5. Maria Nila Gloss Coat 200ML

Swedish brand Maria Nila has been around since 1999, and in experience we trust. Unlike the other sprays featured, this “gloss coat” is to be applied on damp hair only. Spray it after washing, then blow-dry as normal – that’s what activates the formula and brings out the shine and frizz control.

The scent is lovely and refreshing – a fruity-floral mix of red apple, fresia and sandalwood. After using it, blow-drying and straightening my hair, it looked beautifully shiny and glassy without the flattened, overly styled look some glossing products give. Texture-wise, the mist is fine rather than a heavy, wet spray, which is why it doesn’t weigh hair down. It also plays well with humidity – it may not stop your blow-dry from collapsing within hours and but it does make it hold for longer. It’s also colour-safe, so it works well on balayage or highlighted hair.

Best for: a mirror-shine, glossy finish and a blow-dry that holds.

What’s not as good: the scent is strong enough that it won’t suit anyone sensitive to fragrance.

6. K18 HeatBounce Conditioning Heat Protectant 47ML

HeatBounce’s premise is that it works its way into the hair’s cortex instead of just sitting on top, using K18’s resilicore™ tech, which is based on a protein found in nature built to survive extreme heat. The result, as the brand claims, is less breakage after blow-drying and noticeably less frizz and split ends over time.

If your hair’s had a rough few years – bleach, box dye disasters, three years of daily straighteners – this is the one worth the money, not the £10 drugstore spray. The scent is lovely, and my hair felt shinier after styling. It’s doing conditioner duty too, so it’s one less product in your routine. Only real complaint: 47ml is nothing if you’re using this most days, so it’s a rather short-term investment.

Best for: hair that’s genuinely damaged from colour, bleach or repeated heat styling, not just occasional flat-iron use.

What’s not as good: the size. At this price, you’ll be back for a top-up sooner than you’d like.

What is the best heat protectant spray?

The best heat protectant spray depends on your hair type and styling routine. If you regularly use straighteners or curling irons, look for a product that protects up to 230°C while also addressing your hair’s needs, whether that’s hydration, smoothing, volume or colour protection. Ingredients such as silicones, argan oil, keratin and panthenol can help reduce damage and improve manageability.

Do heat protector sprays actually work?

Yes. Heat protectant sprays create a protective barrier between your hair and heated styling tools, helping to reduce moisture loss, minimise breakage and prevent excessive damage caused by high temperatures. While they can’t make your hair immune to heat damage, they can significantly reduce it when used correctly before styling.

Which is better: heat protectant spray or cream?

Neither is universally better – it depends on your hair type. Sprays are typically lighter and work well for fine, normal or oily hair, while creams are often richer and better suited to thick, coarse, curly or very dry hair. Some products also come in serums or lotions for added nourishment.

Should you use heat protectant every time you style your hair?

Yes. If you’re using any heated styling tool, including a hairdryer, straighteners, curling wands or hot brushes, it’s recommended to apply heat protectant first. Repeated heat styling without protection can lead to dryness, split ends and breakage over time.
