Kiehl’s new body cream gave me hydration for days, literally

For years, body care has played second fiddle to facial skincare. We layer on serums, obsess over actives, and invest in elaborate routines for our faces—yet when it comes to the rest of our skin, many of us settle for whatever lotion is within reach. But hydration is hydration, and skin below the neck deserves the same attention, especially during winter.

Thankfully, our most-loved brands are often the first to come to our rescue. The Kiehl’s Ultra Body Mega Moisture Squalane Cream is designed to deliver lasting hydration without the weight or greasiness of traditional body butters. But does it hold up to its claims? I put it to the test.

Kiehl’s formula for deep hydration

First things first – it’s important to know what we are putting on our skin. This generous tube of 250ml retails for £43 and is packed with many of Kiehl’s signature ingredients.

The base of this cream is squalane, an emollient known for its ability to mimic skin’s natural lipids. Unlike heavier occlusives that simply sit on the surface, squalane is lightweight and fast-absorbing, working to reinforce the skin barrier without clogging pores.

The cream also offers glacial glycoprotein, an ingredient known for its moisture-retaining abilities in extreme conditions (originally sourced from Antarctic sea glaciers, so we know it should work). This helps skin stay hydrated for longer, preventing the quick evaporation that often makes lotions feel ineffective by midday.

Finally, pro-ceramides step in to strengthen the skin barrier, reducing transepidermal water loss and reinforcing the skin’s ability to retain moisture over time. Together, these ingredients form a very well-rounded formula that hydrates, protects, and supports overall skin health.

My first impressions

There’s something to love about Kiehl’s staying true to its heritage with its clinical packaging – it’s trustworthy. We know what we’re going to get.

But of course, what matters is what’s on the inside. The texture of this cream is rich, smooth but not overly whipped. It spreads easily, sinks in almost immediately, and leaves skin feeling hydrated but not sticky. Fragrance-wise, it’s barely there—just a clean, neutral scent that won’t interfere with perfumes or other products.

The application

One of my biggest frustrations with body creams is how long they take to settle (and I’m fairly confident I’m not the only one here). Some leave a greasy, sticky film, while others absorb too quickly and seem to disappear entirely.

This formula strikes the right balance. Within seconds of applying, my skin felt smooth, soft, and replenished—but without the slippery residue that makes getting dressed a chore.

Particularly dry areas, like elbows and knees, immediately looked more supple, and the effect lasted throughout the day. The real test came post-shower: typically, my skin feels tight again after a hot rinse, but even without reapplying, I could feel my skin was slightly more hydrated.

The verdict: does it deliver?

Many body creams feel indulgent in the moment but don’t offer much beyond that initial application. This one is different. Even after a few days (shout out to whoever has the time and patience to apply body cream every day), my skin still felt hydrated—a sign that the formula isn’t just providing surface moisture but actually improving the skin’s ability to retain hydration.

Kiehl’s claims up to three days of hydration, which, while a bold statement, doesn’t feel entirely unrealistic. It’s clear that this isn’t just a quick fix: it’s a product that builds moisture levels over time. Anyone dealing with sensitive skin should have a strong case for adopting this cream. But even if your skin is balanced, cold winter months can easily challenge that, so you should consider a richer moisturiser like this one.

Who will love It (and who might not)

This is a strong all-rounder. It’s effective enough for dry skin but not too heavy for those who prefer a lightweight feel. The fragrance-free formula makes it suitable for sensitive skin, and the fast-absorbing nature means it won’t interfere with busy routines.

However, if you prefer a more sensorial experience—a strong scent, a richer balm-like texture—this might not provide the indulgence factor you’re looking for. It’s more about performance than pampering.

The upgrade you need to your routine

Kiehl’s Ultra Body Mega Moisture just works, and I personally love a product that does what it says on the bottle, with no fuss nor inflated adjectives.

If long-lasting hydration and a science-first approach to body care matter to you, it’s well worth considering. While not the most decadent option on the market, it delivers consistent, effective moisture without compromise. And at the end of the day, that’s what truly makes a body cream worth the investment.
