best vitamin c serums

Fixations with a specific skincare ingredient come and go. One minute it’s the niacinamide everyone is talking about, the next it’s hyaluronic acid, the next it’s some other chemical name with more than three syllables.

Unlike some of the skincare “employees of the month,” vitamin C is a trusted ingredient for good reason. It brightens, boosts collagen production, and gives skin that refreshed glow we all crave, especially after a long summer. Dermatologists recommend it, and there’s extensive research on how it works. Technically, you should wear vitamin C all year long, but the post-summer months are particularly important.

While the summer sun is welcomed by all, it leaves its mark: extra time in the sun can lead to oxidative stress, hyperpigmentation, and reduced collagen, making the skin look less firm and more dull. These are all conditions our powerful antioxidant vitamin C can combat.

We’ve spent the past few weeks testing a line-up of eight vitamin c serums, including cult favourites and brand new additions to the market. Ahead: our honest reviews.

What vitamin C serums can really do for your skin

Vitamin C (also called L-ascorbic acid) is definitely not all citrus-flavoured smoke. “There’s good scientific evidence to show that vitamin C has antioxidant effects,” explains dermatologist Melissa Piliang. “It’s a very good ingredient to include in your skin regimen.” In other words: yes, it works. Here’s exactly how:

1. Protecting against external aggressors

The biggest flex of vitamin C is its antioxidant power. UV rays, pollution, even your morning commute – all of it generates free radicals, unstable molecules that chip away at collagen and accelerate ageing.

A layer of vitamin C serum acts like a line of defence, neutralising that damage before it shows up as dullness, fine lines, or rough texture. Skincare experts note that, when combined with SPF(which you totally need to wear), it can protect the skin from external aggressors even more efficiently.

2. Brightening your skin

Another reason vitamin C gets so much love? Its ability to brighten and even out tone. It interferes with melanin production, which means dark spots, post-acne marks, and sun patches gradually look lighter. A long-term study found a 73% improvement in pigmentation among melasma and post‑inflammatory hyperpigmentation patients after using vitamin C via iontophoresis (a clinical treatment device).

3. Boosting collagen production

As we age, collagen levels plummet, and that loss shows up as sagging and wrinkles. Vitamin C is one of the few topical ingredients that can actively stimulate collagen production, helping skin look firmer and smoother over time. Clinical trials have linked daily use to visibly improved fine lines and texture – but you’ll need to give it a solid two to three months before snapping the “after” pictures.

4. Reducing dark circles

The under-eye area is usually where late nights and long weeks show up first – and unlike a breakout, you can’t just cover it with concealer and move on. A small clinical study found that vitamin C made dark circles look lighter. Because of its collagen-boosting properties, it thickens that paper-thin under-eye skin so the pooled blood beneath is less visible.

How we tested the serums and why you can trust us

The Reset team has tested every serum featured in this piece , using each consistently, every morning, for at least 2-3 weeks. This is usually enough time to see whether the serum layers well with sunscreen and makeup, whether skin looks brighter, and whether the formula can cause irritation or redness.

We also tested on different skin types, from sensitive skin to oily, drier and more mature – because, naturally, no two skin types react the same way. As for why you can trust our reviews: we’ve been reviewing skincare products for years. We’ve tried the cult classics, the disappointing launches, and the absolute game-changers. Importantly: we’re completely honest here!

The best vitamin C serums, tried and tested

Tatcha The Brightening Serum 30ml

£86.00, available at Tatcha.co.uk, SpaceNK, and other retailers

Tatcha launched The Brightening Collection (comprised of this serum and an eye cream) late last year, and it instantly took the skincare world by storm.

The star ingredient, Japanese plum (nankou ume), helps even out skin tone and boost firmness. Meanwhile, its 12-Hour Time-Release Vitamin C (a stabilised derivative of the ascorbic acid most brands use) delivers vitamin C slowly throughout the day, helping with brightness and collagen without irritating your skin.

The serum also includes ferulic acid and a pro-glutathione antioxidant booster to correct hyperpigmentation and protect the skin barrier. What I love about it is what everyone loves about it: it truly does work.

The texture is silky and easy to spread, and it evened out my complexion surprisingly quickly (I could see the difference in a week). My skin feels younger and refreshed.

Pros:

  • Silky, easy-to-spread texture that feels luxurious
  • Gentle, continuous brightening with visible results

Cons:

  • High price point

NINI Organics JuiCy: Vitamin C Serum 50ml

£79.00, available at niniorganics.com

This is a vitamin C serum without vitamin C (you heard that right). NINI Organics is all about organic ingredients, so they’ve avoided the typical synthetic formulas and gone au naturel – using only vitamin C-rich whole plant sources.

Ingredients include Kakadu plum, camu camu, goji berries, and papaya (yes, all things I could easily add to my smoothie). There’s also a unique ingredient called Luminia Granatum, derived from pomegranate stem cells, which helps illuminate skin and reduce melanin synthesis.

The serum is gel-like, spreads easily, and absorbs quickly. The scent is divine and feels incredibly luxurious – a mix of upcycled mandarin water, blood orange, and warm vanilla.

As soon as I apply it, my skin looks dewy and hydrated. Importantly, after a month of use, I’ve experienced no irritation, and my skin has a healthy, natural glow. It’s definitely on the pricier side, but being 100% made from nature’s best ingredients makes it feel justified.

Pros:

  • 100% natural, plant-based vitamin C sources
  • Gel-like, fast-absorbing texture with a luxurious scent
  • Gentle on skin, non-irritating even after a month of use

Cons:

  • More on the pricey side

CeraVe Skin Renewing 10% Pure Vitamin C Serum 30ml

£29.00, available at Boots or Superdrug

This serum has won me over pretty much from the first application. I might be slightly biased, only because I really like CeraVe and I’ve used a lot of its products over the years.

But there truly are a lot of pros with this product. Firstly, it’s more gel-like, less oily, so it’s easier to apply and more suitable for all skin types. It’s meant to be fragrance-free but I do notice a faint scent which I oddly really enjoy.

Ingredients-wise, it packs a solid 10% L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), along with hyaluronic acid, vitamin B5, and ceramides for extra hydration and plumpness.

This is the serum I’ve used for longer, and I’ve definitely noticed my skin looking healthier and brighter. It’s functional, reliable, and, just as importantly, reasonably priced – so it ticks all the boxes.

Pros:

  • Gel-like, less oily texture, easy to apply
  • A solid 10% L-ascorbic acid with hydrating hyaluronic acid
  • Affordable and effective

Cons:

  • Slight chemical scent may not be for everyone (though it definitely is for me!)

Paula’s Choice C15 Super Booster 20ml

£54.00, available at Paulaschoice.co.uk, Cult Beauty, and others

15% vitamin C in a serum sure feels like amping things up, and I’m here for it. If I’m going to drop £50 on a serum, it better be strong. My only concern was it being too strong. I was bracing for the usual tingling or irritation, but thankfully there was none of that, and it behaved very well on my skin.

Aside from the potent dose of vitamin C, the formula also has ferulic acid and ergothioneine to brighten, reduce discolouration, and smooth fine lines.

Texture-wise, it’s almost liquid, super easy to spread, and absorbs in seconds. There’s a faint, slightly medicinal scent if you’re really paying attention, but it disappears quite quickly.

After two weeks of use, there was a subtle evenness in my skin tone, and my complexion felt less blotchy. If you have hyperpigmentation, I totally recommend this serum. If you have sensitive skin, however, you may want to play it safe and choose a serum with a smaller concentration.

Pros:

  • Potent 15% vitamin C concentration
  • Lightweight, liquid texture absorbs quickly

Cons:

  • May be too strong for very sensitive skin

Antipodes Glow Vitamin C Brightening Serum 30ml

£38.00, available at antipodesnature.com, LOOKFANTASTIC and Holland & Barrett

When Antipodes says “glow,” it really means it. The serum itself has a slightly glittery tint — it melts away once applied, but the texture makes it feel more like you’re putting on a luxe NUXE oil than a functional vitamin C serum.

The vitamin C here comes from natural sources: Kakadu Plum (which the brand says contains 100 times more vitamin C than oranges), Vinanza grape, kiwi, and bakuchiol (a plant-based retinol alternative).

The fragrance is gorgeous too, a mix of vanilla pod and mandarin that’s more soft and citrusy than overpowering. True, it doesn’t boast the 10% or 15% concentrations you see in other serums, but after a week my skin looked noticeably clearer and brighter. It feels natural (because it is), which makes it a great option for all skin types.

With my sensitive skin, I tend to avoid harsh or abrasive products – but this one feels safe, gentle, and effective. Plus, a little goes a long way, so it’s good value for money.

Pros:

  • Natural vitamin C sources
  • Gentle and safe for sensitive skin

Cons:

  • Glittery colour may not be for everyone

PIXI Vitamin C Serum 30ml

£26.00, available at LOOKFANTASTIC, Boots, and others

I don’t typically enjoy being assaulted by weird perfume-y notes when I’m spreading my vitamin C on my face, but this PIXI serum has a lovely lemony fragrance. Don’t worry – it’s not detergent-like at all; it instantly brings to mind the sun-soaked energy of the Italian Amalfi Coast.

Texture-wise, it has a watery consistency and it is quite runny. I learned to start small with a single drop and spreading it evenly before adding more to avoid the dreaded stickiness. I’ve got combination skin but those with oily skin may benefit from this tip even more!

It layers beautifully with other skincare products and make-up, and after three weeks of using it consistently in the morning, my skin feels brighter. I also had a bit of redness on one of my cheeks that flares up sometimes, and it has noticeably calmed down since I started using it.

Pros:

  • Lovely lemony fragrance
  • Layers well with other products

Cons:

  • Very runny, requires careful application
  • May feel too light for those seeking high-concentration results

VICHY Liftactiv Supreme 16% Pure Vitamin C Serum 20ml

£43.00, available at LOOKFANTASTIC, Boots, and others

With 16% pure vitamin C (the highest concentration out of all ten serums I tried), this one is a true powerhouse. It’s water-based, so very runny – the dropper helps, but you’ll still want to be careful and gentle when applying. Alongside vitamin C, it also packs in hyaluronic acid for hydration and carnosine, another potent antioxidant that helps fight free radicals and protect skin from damage.

I was honestly impressed by how quickly it worked: one of my dark spots looked visibly lighter in just a day, which shows the strength of that high percentage. That said, if you’ve got sensitive skin, proceed with caution – both the high vitamin C concentration and the presence of alcohol could be irritating.

If your main goal is to fade dark spots, firm up your skin, and see results fast, this is your serum. I also have to say: I love the smell. Technically, it’s fragrance-free, but like CeraVe, there’s a distinct chemical scent that lingers. Personally, I find it makes the formula feel more “active” (and effective). Bonus: the price point is surprisingly reasonable given the performance.

Pros:

  • High vitamin C concentration
  • Quick results on dark spots and skin firmness

Cons:

  • Can be irritating for sensitive skin due to the high concentration of vitamin c and presence of alcohol

Glow Recipe Guava Vitamin C + Ferulic Dark Spot Serum 30ml

£41.00, available at Cult Beauty, Sephora, and others

I’m so used to the standard orange-bottled formulas that this sorbet-pink bottle almost feels out of place. The guava isn’t just for show either – it’s an antioxidant-rich fruit that pairs perfectly with the heavy hitters inside: multiple forms of vitamin C, ferulic acid, vitamin E and gentle acids to help refine skin texture.

The texture is very gel-like, which I actually prefer to the more oil-based serums since my skin is naturally oily. It feels slightly tacky on first application, but once SPF and makeup go on top, that disappears completely.

And then there’s the scent. Most vitamin C serums smell quite chemical, but this one is an ode to guava: sweet, fruity, almost cotton candy-like. My skin feels great too – brighter, smoother, and calmer. I’m sure it would work across most skin types, but as someone with oily skin I can confidently recommend it.

Pros:

  • Gel-like texture
  • Contains multiple forms of vitamin C
  • Lovely sweet guava scent

Cons:

  • Slightly tacky initially before layering SPF or makeup

PERS Vitamin C Antioxidant Serum 30ml

£85.00, available at pers-skincare.com and Harrods

PERS is the embodiment of quiet luxury. The packaging is elegant and luxurious, and the range of products is very considered, following a simple four-step system (Protect, Enhance, Repair, Stimulate).

The vitamin C is part of the Protect stage, and it’s a 10% stabilised vitamin C formula paired with vitamin E and other gentle acids. “Stabilised” basically means it’s been formulated in a way that keeps it from breaking down when exposed to light, air, or heat.

The texture is silky, like a proper oil, and the serum disappears almost instantly. Then there’s the smell. All PERS products have a distinctive fragrance crafted by perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur: think pink pepper, rosemary, sandalwood, and a hint of white musk. Not everyone is a fan of fragrance in skincare, but personally, I think it’s a lovely touch.

After a few weeks of daily use, my skin does look a little more even and brighter, and I didn’t notice any irritation at all.

Pros:

  • Silky, oil-like texture absorbs quickly
  • 10% stabilized vitamin C with vitamin E and gentle acids
  • Luxurious fragrance crafted by perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur

Cons:

  • On the expensive side
  • The added fragrance may not appeal to everyone

Garnier Vitamin C Brightening Serum 30ml

£13.99, available at Boots and Superdrug

Most of the serums on this list are definitely on the luxury side, and while they all work, not everyone is ready to part with £80+ just for the promise of brighter skin. Garnier’s Vitamin C Serum is the most affordable of the bunch – but don’t let the price tag fool you, it actually works wonders.

The formula has a 3.5% blend of vitamin C derivatives, niacinamide, salicylic acid, and Melasyl™. You might see some bottles listing 3.5% and others 4%, but it’s essentially the same serum – Garnier just updated the way they present the active blend. The texture is gel-like and super lightweight, and my skin feels firmer and more radiant.

Overall, this serum is perfect for a day-to-day, slather-it-on routine. And thanks to the lower vitamin C concentration, it’s unlikely to cause irritation. If you want a reliable daily serum, this could be the one.

Pros:

  • Very affordable
  • Lightweight, gel-like texture that makes the serum easy to spread and absorb

Cons:

  • Lower vitamin C concentration, so results may be slower or less impactful
